Used Shipping Containers, Inspected and Graded

A used container is the smart buy when you need rugged steel storage and don't need showroom paint. These boxes have already sailed, so the price drops while the structure stays sound. Every unit we list is checked for floor condition, door seals, and rust before it leaves the yard, and the grade is stated up front so you know exactly what you're getting. The savings versus a one-trip unit are real, often several hundred dollars on a 20ft and more on the larger sizes, which is why used containers are the workhorse choice for storage and most ground-based projects.

Cargo-Worthy vs Wind & Water Tight

The two grades you'll see most often differ in how they can be used:

  • Cargo-Worthy (CW): certified structurally sound and fit to ship freight again. Some surface rust and dents, but the doors seal, the gaskets are intact, and the marine-grade ply floor is solid.
  • Wind & Water Tight (WWT): no longer cargo-certified but sealed against rain and drafts. Ideal for stationary storage where the container won't move by sea.
  • Storage-grade: our most economical tier, with more cosmetic wear but a dry, secure interior and working cam-locking doors.

Pricing in this category runs from about $1,050 for smaller used boxes up to $14,000 for large high-cube units. A used 20ft holds roughly 1,170 cubic feet, about the contents of a small house; a 40ft high cube adds a full foot of headroom at 9'6" interior for taller pallets and equipment. Most of our used stock is 40ft and high cube, with some 20ft and specialty units like open-tops and double-door boxes mixed in.

Where Used Containers Fit Best

Contractors use them for tool and material lockups on site. Farms store feed, tack, and machinery out of the weather. Retailers and warehouses add overflow space without pouring a foundation or pulling a building permit. Homeowners lean on them during a remodel or move, and event crews use them as secure on-site bases. A used box also makes a sound starting shell for conversions when you don't mind a little prep work, since the structure underneath is the same heavy Corten steel as a new unit. Inspect the floor and door seals on arrival, set it on level ground, and a used container will serve for many years.

If you'd rather have factory-fresh paint, compare our new containers; if you want the cleanest used option, look at the cargo-worthy boxes. For long-term static storage, the storage container range is purpose-picked for that job. Not sure which grade suits you? Read the buyers guide before you order. Every container ships in stock, arrives on a tilt-bed truck, and our 30-day return policy backs the purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a used shipping container cost?
Used units in this category run from about $1,050 for smaller storage-grade boxes to $14,000 for large high-cube containers. Cargo-worthy 20ft and 40ft units typically sit in the middle of that range, and delivery is a flat $500 anywhere in the US.
What's the difference between cargo-worthy and wind & water tight?
Cargo-worthy containers are certified structurally sound and can still ship freight by sea. Wind & water tight units are sealed against rain and drafts but are no longer cargo-certified, which makes them a cheaper choice for stationary on-site storage.
Will a used container leak?
No. Every unit we sell is checked to be wind and water tight, with intact door gaskets and a sound floor. Used boxes show cosmetic rust and dents, but the interior stays dry.
How is a used container delivered?
It arrives on a tilt-bed truck that slides the container off and sets it on your prepared ground. You'll want about 60-70 feet of clear straight access for a 40ft unit. Delivery is a flat $500 to any of the 50 states.
Can I return a used container if it isn't right?
Yes. We back every order with a 30-day return policy. If the condition isn't what you expected, contact us and we'll sort it out.
