This is a 20-foot used shipping container finished in matte black and modified with a 12-foot roll-up door set into one long side. The original double doors at the end are retained, so you can load pallets end-on or run a forklift straight in through the side opening without swinging anything into the aisle. It is a practical unit for a yard, a job site, or a customer-facing setup where the standard container look is not wanted.

Key Features

  • 12-foot side roll-up door: A framed and reinforced opening in the long side with a coiling steel shutter that lifts into a housing above the header, so nothing swings out and the whole 12-foot span is clear for loading.
  • Matte black finish: Resprayed over a primed surface in a low-sheen black that hides the usual container scuffing and suits retail, event, and residential placements.
  • Original end doors retained: The rear double doors still open to 270 degrees with their locking rods and hasps intact, giving a second access point.
  • COR-TEN steel shell: Weathering steel that forms a protective patina and carries the loads that come with stacking and handling.
  • Marine-grade plywood floor: The original 1 1/8 in floor over steel cross members, rated for pallet jacks and forklift traffic.

The side opening is the reason to choose this unit over a plain 20-footer. Cutting a 12-foot aperture into a sidewall removes a stressed panel, so the opening is framed in with a welded steel header and jamb assembly that carries the load back into the corner posts. The shutter runs in guide channels on either side of that frame and seals against a brush strip and bottom rubber when it is down.

In practice that changes how the box gets used. A standard container is loaded from one end, which means anything at the far wall has to come out past everything in front of it. With a side opening you reach two-thirds of the floor area directly from the outside, which is what makes these units popular as tool cribs, mobile parts stores, and market or event stalls.

This unit is sold used. Expect the cosmetic marks that come with prior service — dings in the corrugation, a repaired patch or two, and door gear that shows wear. The respray covers the shell, not the interior, so the inside walls remain bare corrugated steel.

  • End door opening: approximately 7 ft 8 in wide x 7 ft 5 in high
  • Maximum gross weight: 67,200 lbs (rating)
  • Tare weight: approx. 5,600 lbs (higher than a standard 20 ft box because of the door frame and shutter)

Suitable for equipment and tool storage, on-site workshops, retail or event setups, and farm or ranch storage. It is intended for ground-level use on a level, well-drained surface. The side modification means it is no longer rated for dynamic ocean transport, and any CSC plate on the unit should be treated as void.

  • (1) 12 ft side roll-up shutter door with guide channels and locking hardware
  • (1) Set of double rear doors with integrated locking gear

Matte Black 20ft Container With a Side Roll-Up Door

Some containers hide behind a fence and some end up as part of the customer experience. This 20ft container with a side roll-up door is built for the second job: a matte black finish that reads as deliberate rather than industrial, and a 12-foot side aperture that opens the flank into a serving counter, a display face, or a drive-up storage bay.

Aesthetics aside, the side opening is the functional upgrade. It gives you access along the length of the unit instead of only at one end, which changes how quickly a small team can load, pick, or serve from it.

Customer-Facing and Quick-Access Uses

A wide shutter plus a dark finish suits anywhere the container is seen rather than screened.

  • Brewery, taproom, and patio service or storage points
  • Coffee, food, and merchandise kiosk shells at markets and venues
  • Golf clubs, gyms, and marinas storing gear with quick counter access
  • Landscaping and hardscape yards loading long material off the side
  • Studio, garage, and detailing bays where a wide opening beats end doors

Placement, Heat, and Related Units

Two practical notes before you buy. Set it dead level so the shutter tracks stay true, and think about orientation, because a dark exterior in full sun runs warmer inside than a light one. Leaving the shutter side shaded, or adding vents and insulation, deals with that easily. Delivery needs the container length plus roughly 40 feet of straight approach and 15 feet overhead. See more units in the 20ft container category and the storage container range, or compare the yellow 20ft with dual side shutters and the one-trip roller shutter container in a custom respray.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a black container get hotter inside?

Any steel box in direct sun heats up, and a dark finish absorbs more than a light one. It is a real effect and an easy one to manage: passive vents, a shaded orientation, or an insulated lining all make a large difference. If you plan to work inside it through summer, budget for insulation from the start.

Is the side shutter lockable?

Yes, the roll-up door secures when closed, and the rear cargo doors retain their original locking rods as a second layer. For unattended sites, fit outdoor-rated padlocks and position the shutter face toward a lit, overlooked area rather than a blind perimeter.

Can the exterior be repainted?

It can. Container steel takes a direct-to-metal industrial coating well, provided the surface is properly prepared and any rust is treated first. Plenty of buyers respray to match branding or a site palette. If you want a specific color from the outset, contact us before ordering rather than after delivery.
