This 20ft modified shipping container offers a durable, adaptable base for a wide range of commercial, industrial, or residential uses. Made from high-grade Corten steel, it is engineered for structural integrity and long-term performance. As a custom-built solution it acts as a blank canvas for modifications to fit specific projects, from job site offices and secure storage to mobile retail or equipment enclosures. The design prioritizes functionality, giving a robust, secure structure that can be sited in many environments.
Key Features
- Robust Steel Construction: Built from weathering Corten steel for exceptional strength and resistance to harsh conditions.
- Weather-Resistant Design: A fully welded roof and sealed double doors keep moisture and dust out.
- Standardized Base Dimensions: Standard ISO external footprint for straightforward transport by truck, rail, or ship and easy site placement.
- Secure Locking System: Lockboxes on both rear doors accept standard shipping container locks to deter unauthorized access.
- Ventilation: Integrated passive vents promote airflow and reduce condensation inside.
- Forklift Pockets: Standard base forklift pockets allow lifting and repositioning by qualified operators with suitable equipment.
The container begins as a standard ISO unit chosen for its proven structural durability. Originally engineered for global maritime transport, these containers withstand significant dynamic and static loads. For this custom build, the container is a core structure ready for modification, its corrugated steel walls and reinforced frame forming a rigid shell that can be cut, fitted, and adapted for many purposes.
For commercial use it can become a secure on-site storage container for tools and materials, a temporary workshop, or a mobile concession stand. In industrial settings it suits equipment housing or chemical storage. It is also popular for pop-up retail stores, art studios, or site security posts. The neutral interior and exterior surfaces are ready for customization, whether adding insulation, electrical wiring, windows, or partitioning, allowing the container to be tailored precisely while offering a cost-effective, durable alternative to traditional construction.

Custom Build Options on a 20ft Modified Shipping Container
A container that arrives exactly as your project needs it costs less over the life of the job than one you spend three weekends adapting. This 20ft modified shipping container starts as a one-trip shell and is built out before delivery, so doors, openings, coatings and internal fit-out are decided while the unit is still in the workshop and cutting is done properly with reinforced framing.
The one-trip base matters more than people expect. Modifying a tired used box means dealing with old repairs, uneven panels and paint that will not take a topcoat evenly. Starting from a factory-fresh shell means the welds, the finish and the seals are known quantities, and the result looks like a manufactured product rather than a repair.

How to Brief a Modification Build
Work from the inside out. Decide what goes in the container and how a person moves through it, then place doors and windows to suit that, then choose insulation and finishes. Flag anything electrical early, since it changes where openings can go, and mention the climate, because insulation and anti-condensation treatment are worth specifying before the unit is lined rather than after. Confirm local permitting for your address in parallel, as those rules are set by your municipality.
For a build already specified with a shutter and a respray, see the 20ft one-trip container with roller shutter and RAL 7035 finish. If you want the plain shell to modify yourself, the 20ft one-trip container is the starting point. Frequently Asked Questions
Can any modification be made to a container?
Most can, within structural limits. The corner posts and the frame carry the load, so large openings need engineered reinforcement and there are places you should not cut at all. Roof loading, stacking ability and lifting are all affected by heavy modification. Describe the outcome you want and we will tell you what the shell will and will not support.
Does modifying a container affect its ability to be stacked or shipped?
It can. Once panels are cut, a container is no longer a certified cargo unit even though it retains its castings and can still be lifted and hauled. Stacking a heavily modified box, particularly one with large side openings, should be assessed case by case. If you plan to stack units, say so before the build starts.
How far in advance should I order a custom build?
Sooner than for a stock container, because fabrication happens before dispatch and every added door, window or lining stage adds time. Delivery is scheduled after the order is confirmed and quoted by route, so allow for build and transport when setting your site date. Locking the specification early is the biggest time saver.
