A used shipping container can be a great value — if it's structurally sound and watertight. Before you buy, walk through this checklist (or have us do it for you). Most quality used units are graded Cargo-Worthy or Wind & Water Tight.

1. Structural Rust

Surface rust is normal on used steel; what matters is depth. Look for flaking, pitting, or holes — especially along the bottom rails and corners. Avoid units with rust that has eaten through the steel.

2. Floor Condition

Inspect the marine plywood floor for soft spots, rot, deep gouges, and pest or chemical contamination. A solid floor should support fork-truck traffic without flexing.

3. Doors & Seals

Open and close both doors — they should swing freely and lock with the cam-and-rod gear. Check that the rubber gaskets are intact and pliable; worn seals let in water and air.

4. Watertight Test

Step inside, close the doors, and look for daylight. Any pinholes of light mean potential leaks. Inspect the roof for dents that could pond water.

5. CSC Plate & Documentation

A visible CSC (Container Safety Convention) plate confirms the unit's identity and inspection history — useful if you plan to ship or stack it.
