Shipping containers serve a wide range of storage and modification purposes. Presented here is a pre-owned 40-foot shipping container graded to a wind and watertight standard. It offers a substantial enclosed space for secure material storage, job site organization, or as a base for conversion projects, and it has been inspected to ensure the structure stands up to the elements.

Key Features

  • Wind and watertight grade: Evaluated so the doors seal properly and the structure is free of large holes or significant gaps, keeping rain and wind out.
  • Solid steel construction: Manufactured from COR-TEN steel to withstand stacking and heavy loads, giving a robust shell for securing contents.
  • Standard double-swing doors: One end carries lockable double doors with integrated locking bars for wide interior access during loading and unloading.
  • Cargo-ready flooring: Original marine-grade plywood floor built to support palletized cargo and heavy equipment.
  • Weather-resistant exterior: Keeps its original weather-resistant paint. Surface rust and cosmetic dents typical of pre-used equipment are present but do not compromise wind and watertight integrity.

This 40-foot pre-used container is classified as wind and watertight (WWT) and provides a practical solution for on-site storage, overflow inventory warehousing, or a secure industrial enclosure. It is built from weathering steel, commonly called COR-TEN, which develops a protective patina over time and cuts the need for constant repainting outdoors.

Interior access is through the rear double doors, equipped with steel locking bars and forged steel ratchets that pull the doors tightly against the integrated rubber gaskets. When properly sealed, these parts create the wind and watertight environment.

Internally, a plywood floor sits over a steel cross-member substructure, able to support concentrated loads such as forklifts or loaded pallets when loading from ground level. The walls and ceiling are bare corrugated steel, with tie-down points within the grooves.

Note that this unit is sold "as-is" in used condition and will show signs of prior service, including scratches, dents, and surface rust. It does not, however, have holes that let daylight through the walls, roof, or floor. The wind and watertight classification covers resistance to driven rain and normal air infiltration only; it is not designed for submersion or pressurized water exposure.

A Used 40ft Shipping Container for Sale in Wind and Watertight Condition

The cheapest honest way to buy real square footage is a used 40ft shipping container for sale graded wind and watertight. WWT means exactly what it sounds like: the doors seal, the roof and walls have no holes, and rain and wind stay outside. What it does not mean is a certificate for another ocean voyage, which is why the price sits below cargo-worthy stock.

For anything static, that distinction costs you nothing. A container holding lumber, inventory, or equipment behind a fence does not care whether it could legally be loaded onto a ship again.

Value Storage Jobs Suited to a Preloved 40-Footer

Buy the grade that matches the job. WWT is the sweet spot for anything that stays put and just needs to stay dry.

  • Jobsite storage for materials, formwork, and tools across a long build
  • Inventory and seasonal stock overflow for a growing business
  • Farm storage for implements, feed, and fencing supplies
  • Household goods during a renovation, sale, or extended move
  • A budget base shell for a workshop or garage conversion

Understanding Grades and Managing Condensation

The one thing worth planning for in any used container is condensation, which comes from warm damp air meeting cold steel, not from leaks. Keep the passive vents clear, avoid storing wet material, and add a lining or vents if the contents are moisture sensitive. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between WWT and cargo-worthy?

Wind and watertight means the unit is dry and sealed for storage use. Cargo-worthy means it has been inspected and certified as fit for international shipping, which is a higher bar covering structural criteria and documentation. If your container is staying on the ground, WWT is usually the sensible spend.

Can I ship goods overseas in this container?

Not on this grade. Ocean carriage requires a container certified and plated for that service, and a WWT unit is sold for storage rather than export. If you need a box that can be loaded onto a vessel, ask us about cargo-worthy stock instead before you order.

How much wear should I expect?

Surface rust, scuffed paint, patch repairs, and dents in the panels are all normal on a preloved unit and do not affect whether it keeps water out. What we check is that the frame is square, the floor is sound, and the doors seal and close without forcing. Those are the points that determine the grade.
